I'm so grateful to live in a beautiful state.  Moving from the Southeast has been a dream of mine for a very long time.  The humidity, the heat and the lack of locations, especially free ones drove me nuts.  For me personally, you can only shoot at the beach for so long before you get a little tired of it and not everyone wants to get up at sunrise for the stunning lighting it has to offer (we lived on the East coast of FL so we missed all of the sunset action that the West side had.

Living in Colorado has given me locations I have only ever dreamed of.  Creeks (without gators or water moccasins), lakes (again, without deadly creatures), mountains, forests, pine trees, open fields and wild flowers are just some of the beauty offered here.  I am so grateful to be able to utilize so many options.  

With that being said I love to think outside of the box!  I like trying sessions at all kinds of locations that speak to me.  There's a lot of photographers who do the whole "what you see vs. what I see" posts and I'm definitely one of them.  You may see dead trees and a trickle of water down a stream but I see beams of sunlight with depth from the shadows.  If you are a photographer reading this and you live in an area where you feel like you are rinsing and repeating the same locations I urge you to challenge yourself and try something new.  You went into a super cool bookstore and it gave you such an awesome vibe?  Ask to do a session there and collaborate with a model or do a model call with a couple!  That plant nursery you love to go in (and maybe splurge) that has the really cool earthy decor and fairy garden look is calling your name to have a session in it!  

Not every location you reach out to will say yes but it can't hurt to ask.  I'm a budgeted person so I'm always looking for free or inexpensive places to use but also areas that maybe not every and their Mother has done a shoot in-and if that's the case I'd better do my best to make my images stand out from the rest!  Most small businesses will welcome you with open arms in exchange for tags  for their business.  They offer you a small amount of time in a location that already exists so you get images you love but in return you tag them in your posts and you brag about their shop in your IG stories and reels.  Hello free promotions!  There is nothing better than a local promoting a local.  I will tag the crap out of any local business I use because I want them to want me back and I want to show how much I appreciate them!  

I have a few favorite locations around Colorado Springs that I love to shoot at.  The Living Room is amazing-a small plant shop with a very retro and earthy vibe.  Phelan's Gardens-my favorite plant nursery ever.  And this really cool diner area located in a local antique shop.  Those are just a few and I'm always on the hunt for more!  I don't shoot anywhere I don't want to-not because I'm a snob but because I need an area that speaks to me, is safe and provides me with beautiful lighting unless I'm bringing my own of course!  I will continue my hunt for new locations for eternity.  Feel free to comment below what your favorite location to shoot in is that's a bit out of the ordinary!
